Literacy Support

Literacy Support Service (aimed at children aged 5-18, their parents and schools)

The literacy support service will be provided across schools and education centres in Ballymun. The service is being designed by a cross-section of teachers and education support agencies and will complement and integrate with the work of the Department of Education’s DEIS initiative.

The literacy support service is designed in close collaboration with the Ballymun Principals Network, Ballymun primary and secondary schools, the DES, DEIS, the National Behaviour Support Unit, Ballymun Partnership, Youthreach and the VEC adult education service.

This literacy initiative will provide age-appropriate supports to literacy development throughout the child / young person’s education. The service will engage with parents and families, provide teacher training, support children’s move from primary to secondary school and support school attendance.

The service will draw on local expertise, informed by international proven models and research conducted on behalf of the service design team by School of Education and Lifelong Learning, UCD.

The service commences in September 2008.
